Thank you for all the birthday wishes. They mean the world to me. As you can see in my profile, I haven’t replied to any messages for three years, but that’s how long it took me to recover from you-know-what. I remember meeting with some of you during that time, and my wife, Denise Lopez, and I will be forever thankful for the torrent of love and support we received. Your words and company were critical in my recovery. Thank God, my Memento moment and most of my ailments are in the past. Some pains will never go away, and I made peace with that. And with legal and most medical matters behind me, sometimes I even forget I went through this. It all comes back at some point, but I’m as close to my former as I will ever be. A few weeks ago I was stabbed multiple times by a tenant of the building I manage. Luckily, I was able to disarm him and hold him until police arrived, but not before puncturing my left lung and almost forcing me to cross the river. I’m in recovery now but my life is upside down, starting with being displaced from my apartment due to the violent nature of the attack and the loss of income due to my injuries. Let’s see. Starting June 6, 1944, the allies landed some 2 million men in Europe to fight a much smaller Nazi defense force in a bid to, paraphrasing Churchill, sandblast the world of Nazi scum. Nazi defenses were smaller for several reasons, including a little something called Operation Bodyguard, a whole fake invasion plan to fool nazis about the real invasion plans. Hitler bought it and spread his men thin all over the European coast. The allies spread word of the fake invasion by different means, including double agents. One notable double agent, perhaps the most important double agent in WWII, was Juan Pujol García, a catalonian british sympathizer who hated nazis. So he became a Nazi spy just to become a British spy. He fed Berlin so much counterintelligence it took Hitler 7 weeks to reinforce Normandy just because he was still expecting a bigger invasion somewhere else. That mistake sealed the fate the Third Reich. After the war, a lot of people naturally wanted him dead, so Pujol faked his death with the help of the British and moved to Lagunillas, Venezuela, where he ran a little gift shop in absolute anonymity. He divorced, remarried, had kids, and died in La Trinidad, Caracas, in 1988. He’s buried in Choroní.
